Best fabrics to wear when it’s hot outside

Guys, let’s be honest. THE HEAT IS REAL IN LAGOS YO!

I wake up everyday feeling so blessed to be alive and to see a new day but sometimes I really want to crawl back under my duvet with the air conditioning at zero degrees because I can’t bear the heat that may be waiting for me once I open the front door!

As someone who wears basics everyday, it can be quite difficult to maintain them in this heat without getting them all messed up with sweat patches. And when they do eventually get the sweat patches, I hold on to them because it is not that easy to replace basics over here. Anyway, here comes my saviour! – 87Origins! I stumbled upon their page 2 years ago and when I hosted my last ANKA shopping party, I invited them to be a vendor because I wanted other people to experience the amazingness too.

Now when I was travelling to Dakar, (check out my vlog if you haven’t already)  I didn’t want to use what I considered to be my “nice” basics so I order 4 t-shirts from 87Origins just incase anything happened and I was more than happy to throw them away. Surprisingly enough, they have become my go to t-shirts on the super hot days and I’m not joking! (THIS IS NOT A SPONSORED POST). These t-shirts are extra extra extra extra soft and lightweight cotton, lighter than my holy grail cotton t-shirts from H&M, COS and &otherstories. So let me just say I highly recommend this brand to anyone looking for basics t-shirts, vests and shirts included. Plus you can pair it with a blazer or jacket and still be fresh!!!

Choosing fabrics for any hot country can be quite difficult especially when it always feels like it’s 100 degrees outside, so i’ve put together a list of fabrics you can wear to combat the heat!

  1. COTTON: 100% cotton might I add, cotton is a super lightweight and breathable fabric. It also has a more polished finish than linen which makes it more popular. Cotton fabrics are best when they are not mixed with another fabric, and most of them are heat absorbent such that if you do break a sweat, it is not easily noticeable! Now my secret is out!
  2. LINEN: This is the lightest fabric ever! It is actually the nest fabrics for hot and tropical regions. BUT, it also creases really really fast which is why it is not worn very often  on a day to day basis. But it is the best fabric non-theless! So go yourself some!
  3. Rayon: Rayon is the least popular of the three listed on here, but it is also very good and lightweight. It is a handmade fabric made out of a blend of cotton, wool pulp, and other fibres. Rayon has very thin fibers, which allows it to breathe more than other fabrics and gives it a lightness that prevents it from sticking to a body. Since it is so comfortable and cooling to wear, rayon is an especially good fabric for sportswear and summer dresses. Oh! and it was invented as a cheaper alternative to silk (which also makes silk a good summer fabric). – but not the top three I’m afraid!
  4. Denim/Chambray: Denim is a thick woven fabric made out of cotton fibres. It is the best heat absorbent in hot climates but it is definitely heavier than cotton. Some people prefer Chambray to denim because it is lighter, but the fit denim offers definitely outweighs the weight of it for me!

I really hope this post helps you!
